How to select the correct tempo:

Tempo is the most personal aspect of golf. You have a natural speed of speech and walking. You also have a natural speed of stroke and swing.

We recommend hitting putts until you feel comfortable, then set the metronome to the speed of your stroke.

Make a note of your speed. When you return to practice another day, set the metronome on the recorded speed.

Some days your recorded tempo will seem fast, and some days slow. Sticking to your established tempo will produce consistent results.

Play a competitive game. Use the metronome and stay in tempo.

The 4 Beat Process - The Ultimate Tempo Process

The 4 beat process is used by some of the finest players in the world. It gives the player a consistent routine regardless of pressure.

The stroke or swing is divided into 4 beats:
1. On the first beat, the player turns his head to the target
2. Beat two: return the eyes to the ball
3. Beat three: initiate the backswing so the end of the swing is on the 3rd beat
4. Swing through so the 4th beat is at impact

Drills and Games with Metronome

1. 50 swings with beat - back and through with no ball

2. Eyes closed - 50 swings back and through - this reinforces the feel of the tempo

3. Putt. This is the easiest club to find your tempo. Putt short putts, then long putts focusing only on the tempo and distance control.

4. Chip. This tempo will be a little slower than the putter tempo. Hit chip and run shots focusing on the tempo and distance control.

5. Pitch shots. Swing the wedge to find your full swing tempo. Don't rush. Hit shots in rhythm to various distances while staying with the beat of the metronome.

6. Bunker shots.

7. Full swing. Note of the tempo you use while making your best shots.

8. Competitive tempo. Create a competition and use the metronome. See if your tempo quickens.
